WE WERE THERE IN: July

REVIEW: We love Talkeetna. So we find it well worth it to stay in this sort of crowded, often noisy campground. We were grateful for the proximity to town and the fire pit. Derek set up a tarp over the fire pit so that we could stay outside while the kids napped even though it rained buckets while we were there. If we could have maneuvered into one, we would have stayed closer to the river, maybe in one row back, but the sites were just wonky for backing in, even with our small-ish trailer. Some sites you probably could have pulled through.

Other things to note:

  • We love the Fairview "Inn" (it's a bar). Glad it's back open after a COVID hiatus. If you can find childcare or noise-canceling headphones, they have great live music in the summer. During the day you can also play out back by the stage or play ping pong under the covered seating area.

  • Walking the trail over the bridge is great for kids.

  • One day we're going to do the Mahay's boat tour.

  • The Denali Brewing Company is not to be missed.

  • The Flying Squirrel Bakery & Cafe is super delicious. Leave plenty of time for them to make your food from scratch. They do pizza at dinner time on the weekends.

  • X&Y Lakes have lovely trails and we enjoyed canoe-ing around. The portages are straightforward if you'd like to connect X, Y, or Z lake together for a longer trip.
