WE WENT IN: July

Review: It's hard to beat Seward. But it's not for those looking for privacy or wilderness. This is a campground for folks looking to stay in a beautiful, fun Alaska town for a lot less money than an airbnb or hotel. We stayed in a dry site and we still had a) views of the water b) easy access to the water and c) easy access to trash cans, bathrooms, and, of course, all that Seward has to offer. I had to teach classes while we were here so it was great to be able to get to coffee shops with stronger wifi on those days.

We were on the end, which was mostly great but did mean we had cars coming around us so we had to watch Isaac a bit more. We had a good bit of grass for play and a nice fire pit. Other sites in our row had more of a hill, so we were grateful for our flat-ish outdoor space. The wind in Seward can be fierce, and our weekend there was no exception. We couldn't put out the awning.

We had different neighbors on the one side every night, but did share a glass of wine with a family group in front of us who were there the same nights as us. That's a great thing about Alaska camper-ing - people are friendly, helpful, and open to sharing a beverage.

Other things to note:

  • We highly recommend the SeaLife Center. You can buy a ticket and go in and out all day, which is great for kids who need to take a nap mid-day.

  • Restaurants weren't easy to get into whenever we wanted because it was so tourist-y in July, but we were grateful to get a great upstairs-away-from-others table at the Seward Brewing Company. We had a great view which kept Isaac pretty happy.

  • The trail along the waterfront is paved and super easy for strollers. Heading into town: Watch for otters and boats of all shapes and sizes. There is an excellent park at the trail's bend between the campground and the end of town. It has little kids and big kids sections, which we really appreciate for our toddler. Heading toward the marina: the creek is fun to play in and there is another park by the place where people fish at the bridge.

  • Bring a raincoat. We had great weather, but it was still windy and usually Seward and "great weather" are not the norm.
